Additional Homestead Exemption for Senior Citizens

There are many senior citizens in the State of Florida who are now eligible to claim a second $50,000 Homestead Exemption. The additional tax exemptions are available for residents of cities that have adopted the additional exemption provision. According to the Broward County Property Appraiser’s office these exemptions are also available to senior citizens on portion of taxed and city taxes.

As a result of this provision, an average senior citizen in Broward County can save nearly $300 every year in taxes. However, only people above the age of 65 qualify to be senior citizens. So then if you are over 65 years of age and have a combined and adjusted household income of up to $23,463, then you can file an application for homestead exemption at the Broward Property Appraisal office. If you haven’t filed for the exemption yet, then obviously you are late. The deadline set by the State of Florida law was 1st March. Nevertheless, all is not lost. You can still file the application at the Broward County Appraiser’s office. Also submit a late filing ‘good cause’ petition to the Value Adjustment Board.
